SUMMER SOUNDS HIT ALL THE RIGHT NOTES

Amidst all the heat we have been experiencing, an evening of cool music was held at the beautiful Glades Ballroom. The Weston Music Society (WMS)presented Summer Sounds featuring South Florida vocalist Dreya Starr.

And a star she proved to be.  From her opening with a familiar American tune, “Misty,” through English and Spanish favorites, which included songs by Lin Manuel Miranda and selections written for Celine Dion and Mariah Carey, she enchanted the audience.  Her interpretation of “Memory” from “Cats “was remarkable.  Her rendition of “Think of Me” from “The Phantom of the Opera” highlighted her range and brilliance and received a long ovation.

A side note of interest.  The Miami Marlins have a Colombian Heritage Celebration Day.   The Marlins reached out to the American Business Network, who reached out to the WMS, who contacted the South Florida Symphony Orchestra.  With this support, Dreya sang both the Colombian National Anthem and the US National Anthem at the game.  When asked if she liked baseball, she responded, “I do now!”

Two outstanding citizens were honored with the Weston Music Society Platinum Circle Award for their outstanding community work on behalf of the Arts.  Nancy Russo, who was introduced by her daughters, has been instrumental in the Harvest Drive and the Weston Friends, among many other activities. She has been a great supporter of the WMS and its activities.  Lou Marett, current President of the WMS, has taken the organization to a new level, expanding outreach to local supporters and symphony orchestras.

The evening ended with a delightful dessert reception catered by Unique Occasions and Event Planning.  Dreya and the trio of musicians who backed her performance mingled with the attendees for the perfect closing touch to a wonderful musical evening.
