From community engagement and safety education to fitness and recreation, Plantation offers opportunities for older adults to stay involved and enjoy an active lifestyle. Staying healthy and engaged becomes increasingly important as we grow older, and the City of Plantation offers a variety of programs designed to help senior residents do just that. Whether making new friends, learning ways to stay safe, or enjoying recreational activities, older adults have numerous opportunities to remain active and connected to their community.
Building Connections Through S.A.L.T.
One of Plantation’s lesser-known resources is the Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) program, operated by the Plantation Police Department’s Community Engagement Unit. Designed for residents aged 50 and older, S.A.L.T. combines social activities, community service, and public safety education.
The program provides an opportunity for participants to develop friendships, stay informed about issues affecting older adults, and build positive relationships with local police officers.
S.A.L.T. meets on the third Thursday of each month, beginning with a complimentary breakfast at 9:00 a.m., followed by a meeting from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Residents interested in participating can contact the Plantation Police Department’s Community Engagement Unit at 954-916-5602.
Staying Informed and Safe
Plantation also offers opportunities for residents to learn more about public safety through its Citizens Police Academy. This free, 10-week educational program provides an inside look at police operations through interactive presentations and demonstrations.
Participants explore topics such as crime prevention, criminal investigations, K-9 operations, and firearms safety. Beyond offering valuable information, the academy encourages stronger relationships between residents and the officers who serve their community.
Fitness, Recreation, and Wellness
Physical activity is another important ingredient in healthy aging, and Plantation Central Park offers numerous ways for residents to stay moving.
The park features an aquatic complex with two Olympic-sized swimming pools, pickleball and basketball courts, a 400-meter walking and running track, and a fitness center. Scenic pathways surrounding a 10-acre lake provide a peaceful setting for an afternoon stroll or morning exercise.
For those seeking a gentler workout, the park’s aquatic fitness opportunities can provide a low-impact way to improve strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health while reducing stress on the joints. Recreational sports and group activities also offer opportunities to meet neighbors and build lasting friendships.
Making the Most of Life in Plantation
Healthy aging involves more than physical fitness. Maintaining friendships, learning new skills, and remaining involved in the community are equally important to overall well-being.
Through programs such as S.A.L.T., the Citizens Police Academy, and the recreational opportunities at Central Park, Plantation offers older residents multiple ways to stay active, informed, and connected.
