A major transportation project years in the making is moving closer to construction, bringing significant changes to one of Broward County’s most important east-west corridors. The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) SW 10th Street Connector Project is scheduled to begin early construction work this summer, with major construction expected to continue through 2032.
FDOT claims the $1.3 billion project will improve safety, reduce congestion, and better connect regional traffic traveling between the Sawgrass Expressway and I-95. For residents, commuters, businesses, and visitors who rely on SW 10th Street, the project represents one of the most significant roadway investments in the area’s recent history and will likely funnel a significant portion of I-95’s southbound traffic onto the Sawgrass Expressway.
At the heart of the plan is the creation of two separate roadway systems along SW 10th Street. One set of lanes, known as the SW 10th Street Connector lanes, will be dedicated to through-traffic moving between the Sawgrass Expressway and I-95. A reconstructed local SW 10th Street will serve nearby neighborhoods and businesses, helping separate local trips from longer-distance commuter traffic.
The project also includes a 12-foot-wide shared-use two-mile path along the local roadway for pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition to the work along SW 10th Street, FDOT plans major changes on I-95 between Sample Road and just north of Hillsboro Boulevard. These improvements include the reconstruction of the I-95 interchanges at SW 10th Street and Hillsboro Boulevard, the expansion of I-95 Express Lanes through the project area, and the total reconstruction of the NW 48th Street bridge.
Early construction is expected to begin this Summer and will include noise-barrier walls along SW 10th Street, utility relocations, and reconstruction of the NW 48th Street bridge. According to FDOT, more than 10,000 feet of noise-barrier walls will be installed to help reduce traffic noise in nearby neighborhoods.
Major corridor construction is scheduled to begin in Summer 2027 and will be carried out in phases through 2032. FDOT has selected two construction teams for the project: Prince/OHLA Joint Venture for Segment A and Archer Western for Segment B. The teams will work under FDOT oversight and coordinate across the project corridor to maintain safe travel and keep the community informed throughout construction.
The project is part of the state’s Moving Florida Forward initiative, which supports major infrastructure investments designed to improve safety, reliability, and long-term transportation performance.
Earlier versions of the project drew strong opposition from nearby residents and community groups concerned about traffic, access, noise, and neighborhood impacts. The current project reflects years of public outreach and revisions intended to separate regional traffic from local traffic while adding the noise walls, shared-use path, and other livability improvements.
As construction begins, residents and commuters should expect periodic updates, lane closure information, and public outreach from FDOT.
