The Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center continues to play an important role in the lives of Pembroke Pines residents, offering programs, services, and transportation that help older adults stay active, independent, and connected.
Located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue, the 53,000-square-foot facility serves residents throughout southwest Broward County. The center offers a wide range of services, including health support, social services, nutrition programs, adult day care, educational classes, recreational activities, artistic programs, and special events. It is also located next to Pines Point, the city’s senior housing complex, making it a central hub for many older residents.
This year, the center’s reach has grown even further. During the 2026 State of the City, Mayor Angelo Castillo highlighted a state grant that helped add five new buses to the center’s transportation program. According to the city, the service provided approximately 21,000 rides to senior citizens during the last fiscal year.
For many older adults, transportation is more than a convenience. It can be the difference between missing an appointment and receiving needed care, or between staying home and participating in community life. The center’s transportation services help registered members get to medical and dental appointments, pharmacies, grocery stores, social service agencies, legal service agencies, post offices, banks, and the center itself.
The city says there is no charge for the transportation service, making it an especially valuable resource for seniors who no longer drive or who have limited access to reliable transportation. The added buses are expected to help the program serve more residents and improve access to essential services.
Beyond transportation, the center offers opportunities for learning, fitness, socialization, support groups, health screenings, special events, movies, games, and volunteer involvement. Membership is free for those age 60 and older, while adults under 60 may join for an annual fee.
As Pembroke Pines continues to grow, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center remains one of the city’s most important community resources. By expanding transportation and programming, the center is helping seniors remain engaged, supported, and connected to the city they call home.
