Music at the Heart of Learning Hawkes Bluff’s Principal Earns Statewide Recognition

Hawkes Bluff Elementary School is celebrating a remarkable achievement as Principal Melinda “Mindy” Cunningham has been named the 2026 Florida Elementary School Administrator of the Year by the Florida Music Education Association (FMEA). This prestigious honor recognizes her exceptional leadership and steadfast commitment to ensuring that music is not treated as an optional enrichment, but as a vital part of every child’s education and development.

Nominated by Hawkes Bluff music teacher Jessica Gronberg, Cunningham has been widely praised for fostering a school culture where the arts are deeply valued and accessible to all students. Under her guidance, music has become an essential pillar of the Hawkes Bluff experience, enriching academic growth, creativity, and confidence among students.

Thanks to her vision, the school has grown into a vibrant hub of musical opportunity. Programs such as Piano Club provide students with foundational instrumental skills, while the energetic Drumline Club promotes rhythm, collaboration, and school spirit. Harmonious Hawkes, the school’s two auditioned choruses, regularly perform together and showcase the talent and dedication of young singers. In addition, the Musical Theater program seamlessly integrates drama, dance, and music, offering students a well-rounded performing arts experience.
