Weston Mayor Margaret “Peggy” Brown will have a new role in helping shape the future of Broward County’s public schools at a time when the district is confronting one of its most significant challenges: declining student enrollment.
Brown was recently appointed by Broward County School Board Member Adam Cervera to serve as the District 6 representative on the Broward County Public Schools Facilities Task Force Committee for the 2026-2027 school year. Her appointment runs through June 30, 2027.
The Facilities Task Force advises the School Board on issues involving school construction, maintenance, renovations and long-term facility planning. Members review individual school needs and help recommend priorities for the district’s capital budget.
Those responsibilities have become increasingly important as Broward County Public Schools adjusts to having fewer students.
District figures show total enrollment, including charter schools, fell from 267,970 students during the 2019-2020 school year to 236,667 in 2025-2026, a decline of more than 31,000 students, or nearly 12 percent.
The decline is even more pronounced among traditional district-operated schools. Excluding charter enrollment, Broward schools served approximately 221,000 students in 2019-2020, compared with fewer than 188,000 in 2025-2026.
Fewer students can create difficult decisions for a school district designed to serve a much larger population. Schools with significant unused capacity still require maintenance, staffing, utilities and security. At the same time, state rules require Broward to make better use of existing classroom space before receiving approval for some new construction funding.
The district has already explored strategies including consolidating or closing under-enrolled schools, changing attendance boundaries and finding new uses for school properties. Such decisions can have significant effects on students, families and surrounding communities.
For Weston, Brown’s appointment provides the city with a voice in those conversations. Weston is home to some of Broward’s largest and most highly regarded public schools, making decisions about enrollment projections, capacity and capital improvements particularly important to local families.
As the district works to balance shrinking enrollment with the need to maintain high-quality school facilities, the Facilities Task Force will help determine where limited resources are best directed.
Brown’s role gives Weston an opportunity to participate directly in that process and advocate for the needs of students and schools in the community while helping Broward County Public Schools plan for a future that may look considerably different from its past.
