STAY OR GO? This is the hardest call you’ll make during a hurricane.
Most western Broward residents won’t receive a mandatory evacuation
order — you’re inland, away from storm surge. But that doesn’t mean
staying is always the right choice. Here’s how to think it through.

SHELTERS BASICS
County shelters are safe, but not comfortable.
Cots and bottled water are not provided. Bring bedding, a pillow, food and water.
Shelters open only as needed, and not all will open for every storm. Confirm a shelter is open before you go.
Bring entertainment, especially for kids.
There may be long waits.
No registration is required for general population shelters.
Your best option is staying with family or friends outside the danger zone. Shelters are a solid last resort.

PETS & SHELTERS
Broward County may open up to three pet-friendly shelters, though not every city has one and all three may not open for every storm. Space is first come, first served.
Accepted animals include dogs, cats, domestic birds, rabbits, gerbils, guinea pigs, mice and hamsters.
Bring a carrier or crate for each pet, a collar and leash for dogs, rabies proof for dogs and cats, your pet’s Broward County registration tag, and one week of supplies. Owners must stay with pets and provide their care.
Service animals are allowed at every Broward County shelter under federal ADA law.
A pet-friendly hotel or motel outside the evacuation area is often the most comfortable option. Check policies before hurricane season and book early.

Access & Support
ADA accommodations: If anyone in your household needs transfer help, sign language interpretation, auxiliary aids or a quiet zone, call 954-831-3902 (TTY 954-831-3940). All shelters provide reasonable accommodations under the ADA.
Special Needs Shelters: For people who need more support than a general shelter provides, but not hospitalization, Broward County operates five Special Needs Shelters, including one for children. These shelters have medical staff and backup power for essential equipment. Family members and caregivers are encouraged to come. Pre-registration is open year-round.
Vulnerable Population Registry: If you are at risk due to age, frailty or disability and plan to stay home, register with Broward County’s Vulnerable Population Registry. It does not guarantee services, but it helps your city plan emergency response.
