The Rotary Club of Weston continued its tradition of celebrating youth achievement and leadership during its March 12 weekly meeting, placing a special spotlight on inspiring local students and the impact of service-driven programs.
The meeting began with an invocation and pledge led by John Urban, followed by a warm welcome to guests, including school faculty, staff, students, and their families. Membership Chair Mercy Velazquez greeted visitors, and the club also celebrated Thekla Salzman’s transition to Blue Badge member status, marking her deeper commitment to Rotary’s mission of service above self.
A highlight of the morning was the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) student reflections. Participants shared how the three-day leadership camp helped them grow both personally and socially. Students spoke candidly about gaining confidence, stepping outside their comfort zones, and learning the importance of empathy, active listening, and servant leadership. Their experiences underscored the powerful role Rotary plays in shaping the next generation of leaders.
The program then turned to one of Rotary’s most meaningful traditions: honoring exceptional students in the community. Two remarkable young women, representing Western High School and Cypress Bay High School, were recognized as Students of the Month.
Sarah Ojeda was celebrated for her dedication to community service. Alongside her twin sister, she co-founded the nonprofit Kids Deserve It, which supports underprivileged children during the holiday season. Her initiative reflects a deep commitment to giving back and making a tangible difference in the lives of others.
Alexandra Nunez earned recognition for her academic excellence and leadership. As President of the National Honor Society, she has demonstrated both scholastic achievement and a passion for guiding her peers. Her acceptance into the University of Florida Honors College is a testament to her hard work and bright future.
Both students expressed heartfelt gratitude to their families, mentors, and school communities for their unwavering support.
The meeting served as a powerful reminder that through leadership, service, and opportunity, today’s students are already making a meaningful impact.
