Hollywood’s Cardboard Regatta Was Smooth Sailing

In 2008, The Cardboard Boat Race in Hollywood was created to bring the community together for a fun family-friendly event while showcasing the City of Hollywood Marina’s facility and amenities. The festivities were initially organized by the marina staff, but within three years the race grew, and the Hollywood Special Events was brought in to share the responsibility while the Marina then transitioned to become a division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts.

The anticipated annual event at the Hollywood Marina continues to grow due to the support of participation from many community organizations, increased promotion for the event to outside agencies, schools and community groups, conservationists, activists, public figures, and of course, boat-loving residents. The reformatting of the event in regard to the schedule, racecourse layout and event categories have also been a big factor to engage more participants.

During the first 3-4 hours, participants get into the competitive spirit by constructing a boat out of cardboard on-site for their team. They may also be constructed off-site, but competitors find it more exciting to design, construct, paint, and name their vessels with their fellow mates all in an effort to win the title in the many fun categories. But it’s the coveted trophy that everyone paddles for.

“It doesn’t take long for wet cardboard to sink, but with expertly applied duct tape in strategic locations, crews can make a sea-worthy vessel float just long enough to make their way around the aqua course,” explained Joann Hussey, City of Hollywood Communications Manager.

The recent 2019 race was the largest attendance to date with 45 crews entering the races. Out of 45 boats entered, 16 stayed afloat until the end and were the “Last Boats Sailing. “
