Cleveland Clinic Florida Named Best Hospital in South Florida

The best gets better. Once again, Weston-based Cleveland Clinic Florida has been ranked as the No. 1  hospital in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area by U.S. News & World Report. The magazine’s annual Best Hospitals survey ranked 67 hospitals in South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties). This is the third time in the past four years that Cleveland Clinic Florida has earned this distinction. In addition, it is ranked fifth in the state out of the 269 hospitals reviewed.

Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery specialty continues to be nationally ranked, jumping eight spots to No. 17 for 2019-2020. Additionally, five specialties ranked as “high performing”, one more than the previous year. The high performing specialties include Geriatrics, Nephrology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, and Pulmonary and Lung Services.

For the second year in a row, Cleveland Clinic Florida rated “high performing” in all nine common conditions and procedures evaluated by the magazine. These include abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, colon cancer surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hip replacement, knee replacement, and lung cancer surgery.

That’s not surprising when you consider that Cleveland Clinic Florida is the first hospital in region to offer a new treatment for COPD. Its Pulmonary Medicine Department is now performing this revolutionary non-surgical treatment which involves placing endobronchial valves in patients’ lungs to help them breathe easier. Cleveland Clinic Florida physicians are also credited with discovering a revolutionary breakthrough in gallbladder removal surgery. By using a novel intraoperative imaging technique called near-infrared fluorescent cholangiography (NIFC), doctors are now able to dramatically reduce the risk of complications associated with gallbladder removal.

In addition to cutting-edge science, Cleveland Clinic Florida is committed to patient care. Earlier this year is opened a new hospital wing here in Weston with a state-of-the-art Emergency Department. It also opened the Coral Springs Family Health Center, which provides ambulatory surgical services, as well as a new practice in Wellington to expand its reach into Palm Beach County.

Cleveland Clinic Florida CEO and President Wael Barsoum, MD, says it is an honor to be recognized for its commitment to high quality care. “This recognition belongs to our outstanding team of caregivers who are dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of our patients. I am proud of the world-class care they provide and their commitment to putting our patients first every day.”

U.S. News & World Report publishes its annual Best Hospitals list to guide patients who need a high level of care because they face a particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient safety, survival rates, nurse staffing and other data are used to determine the rankings in most specialties.
