Sagemont School Changes Name to Sagemont Preparatory Academy

The Sagemont School announced last month that it has changed its name to become Sagemont Preparatory School (Sagemont Prep), whose mission is to inspire academic excellence through intellectual exploration, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Students at Sagemont Prep are encouraged to take responsible risks and develop a deep understanding of social responsibility as active agents of change. This evolution comes after a year-long brand, image, mission, and educational revitalization project.

To celebrate the milestone, the school hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on January 26, with Weston Mayor Peggy Brown cutting the ribbon, along with Sagemont Prep’s Head of School Mellesia Nelson.

Sagemont Prep also nurtures students’ abilities to connect existing knowledge to unique ideas that extend beyond the classroom. Examples include:

A student-run coffee shop — Pride Rock — which provides a way to learn about, entrepreneurship, & economics.

In kindergarten, students learn to collaborate and create an in-school marketplace called Kindermart. Students conduct and use research to create their own business, and celebrate their kinderpreneurship with a culminating event and opening of their marketplace to the school community.

The school’s Week without Walls takes students outside of the school building where they engage in community service and exploration. The program includes experiences like learning to fly a plane or exploring horticulture at local farms.

“We are ecstatic to unveil our new image and name to the larger Broward County community. Sagemont Preparatory School better reflects our mission to prepare students not only for what is known, but also what is unknown as they become the architects of the future,” commented Mellesia Nelson, Sagemont Preparatory Head of School. “Our school aims to break the traditional grades-driven approach to explore ideas, partnership and leadership to expose our students to the vulnerability that leads them to student-powered confidence, new skills, knowledge, and ultimately — success.”

In addition to changing the name of the school to better reflect its mission to empower students to lead and be prepared for the future, school leaders and staff also collaborated to incorporate innovative teaching strategies and instill an entrepreneurial mindset, while reevaluating instructional practices to increase the rigor of lessons.

Sagemont Preparatory School is part of Spring Education Group, a multi-school network providing superior private school education from infant care through high school. For more information, visit www.Sagemont.com.
