The Weston Friends Club celebrated a major milestone this year – its 25th anniversary. While the club has certainly grown over the years, both in terms of membership and program offerings, much remains the same. Weston Friends Club is still all about making new and lasting friendships.
The club started 25 years ago, when Weston was just a small town and residents were looking for a way to socialize and have fun. First Vice President – Media Relations Nancy Russo says Weston Friends Club was originally a newcomers club.
“In 1994, Weston was still in its infancy with new residents constantly relocating here. Residents wanted to make new friends, engage in various activities as singles or couples, and Weston Newcomers filled those needs,” explains Russo. “Weston Friends Club continues to be somewhat of a newcomers club, but also draws members who have been long-time residents. Many new members join after retirement or becoming empty nesters.”
Part of the appeal of the Weston Friends Club is the wide variety of activities it offers, with programs for all interests and hobbies. Russo says the club currently has four book clubs, five canasta groups, as well as bridge and mah-jongg groups. In addition, it has programs for special interests such as Food and Fun, a foreign movie group, a monthly Lunch Bunch, and Lunch and a Movie. Weston Friends Club also arranges outings to museums and theaters, as well as hosts cocktail parties at members’ homes.
This past year, the Weston Friends Club added two new programs which appeal to a wider audience. Russo says “Weston Guys Meet & Eat” is a men’s group that meets monthly for breakfast and conversation. It occasionally welcomes a guest speaker.
“Our newest addition is a Travel Club, with vendors coming to speak to members about river cruises and other travel options,” notes Russo. “In the near future, the Travel Club hopes to plan a group trip for its members.”
The Weston Friends Club welcomes new members. Its annual dues are $40, which covers the cost of the membership directory and helps subsidize the club’s annual holiday luncheon and raffle prizes.
Russo encourages members of the Weston community to join. She says she and her husband have made many long-time friendships through the Weston Friends Club. “Once you join this group, you will be so glad you are part of the club and its activities and possibly wonder why you did not join sooner.”
