On October 28, Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm—the strongest hurricane ever recorded to strike the island. The devastation has been catastrophic. Nearly 1.9 million people have been affected, with thousands displaced from their homes. In St. Elizabeth Parish, an estimated 90% of homes were destroyed, and much of the island remains without power.
For many Broward County residents with ties to Jamaica—whether through family, heritage, or simply a love for the island—the images of destruction have been heartbreaking. But there are concrete ways we can help our Caribbean neighbors during this critical time.
Give Cash Directly to Families
Organizations like GiveDirectly are providing $650 cash payments directly to families in the hardest-hit communities, allowing them to purchase exactly what they need.

Support Food and Essential Relief
Food For The Poor Jamaica, the island’s largest charity organization, is on the ground distributing food packages, clean water, and essential supplies. With headquarters in Coconut Creek, this South Florida-based organization has deep roots in Jamaica and a proven track record. Donate at www.foodforthepoorja.org or drop off supplies at their warehouse at 6401 Lyons Road in Coconut Creek.
World Central Kitchen is serving fresh meals to displaced families through partner kitchens across the island. Support their relief efforts at www.wck.org.
Provide Emergency Supplies and Long-Term Recovery
Global Empowerment Mission, based right here in Doral, has teams on the ground in Kingston coordinating large-scale relief operations. They’re accepting both monetary donations and physical supplies through their Amazon wishlist.
The Jamaica Red Cross and international partners like CARE, Project HOPE, and Catholic Relief Services are also providing medical supplies, shelter assistance, and long-term rebuilding support.
Every contribution—whether $10 or $1,000—makes a real difference in helping Jamaica recover and rebuild. Together, we can help restore hope to a nation that has shared so much with the world.
