Every October, Cooper City transforms into a glowing showcase of spooky creativity as residents take part in the Halloween Home Decorating Contest. From eerie inflatables and cobweb-covered porches to twinkling jack-o’-lanterns and bone-chilling sound effects, the contest has become one of the city’s most beloved traditions.
Registration opens on October 1 at 9:00 a.m. through the Cooper City Community Center, and residents have until October 25 to officially enter. Once the deadline passes, judges will begin touring participating homes, carefully considering categories such as creativity, originality, use of lighting and sound, and overall “wow” factor.
Of course, the fun doesn’t stop with the judges. After entries are in, the city shares a list of participating homes so families can plan their own self-guided “haunted house tour” around the community. It’s a chance for neighbors to stroll together, kids to point out their favorite displays, and families to enjoy a festive outing without ever leaving town.
For the decorators, it’s more than a contest. Many participants see it as an opportunity to bring joy to their neighbors, to collaborate with family members, or to showcase their creative side. Past entries have ranged from whimsical pumpkin-lined pathways to elaborate front yards transformed into graveyards, pirate ships, or ghostly gatherings.
Winners are announced shortly after judging concludes, often receiving recognition from the City and the admiration of the entire community. But perhaps the greatest reward is the excitement on the faces of children (and adults!) as they drive or walk by these glowing, spirited creations.
Whether you’re planning to enter this year’s contest or simply enjoy the sights, Cooper City’s Halloween Home Decorating Contest is sure to spark plenty of seasonal cheer. So grab your walking shoes, plan your route, and prepare to be amazed at the spooky—and spectacular—talent right here in our community.
