Students at Big Blue Marble Academy (BBMA) in Coral Springs are proving that even small hands can make a big difference. Through their participation in the academy-wide “Change for a Change” initiative, the young learners raised over $1,200, enough to support prenatal and postnatal care for 12 mothers and their babies at Rotifunk Hospital in Sierra Leone, Africa.
The campaign, held throughout March and April, is part of BBMA’s Heart Projects, which teach children the power of service, empathy, and global citizenship. In Coral Springs, students learned about the needs of new mothers in Sierra Leone—access to clean water, healthy food, and medical care—while working hands-on to make a difference.
The children actively engaged in every aspect of the project. They created posters, brainstormed display locations, and asked for donations to support their cause. In the classroom, they collected and counted change during friendly weekly competitions, rolled coins, and made heartfelt cards for the mothers receiving care at Rotifunk Hospital.
“At Big Blue Marble Academy, we want to empower our young learners to understand they have the ability to make a difference in the lives of others—whether they live next door or across the world,” said Donna Whittaker, Vice President of Curriculum and Education at BBMA. “This initiative not only raises funds but helps children grow socially and emotionally while strengthening math and writing skills.”
Rather than focusing solely on dollar amounts, the children tracked their progress in terms of how many “mommies” their change could help, making the impact even more tangible.
Collectively, students across all BBMA campuses raised an impressive $52,516.39, providing vital care for more than 500 mothers and their newborns. BBMA Coral Springs is proud to be part of this inspiring global effort.
