Summer’s Almost Here—Are You Ready for Your Next Adventure?

As summer approaches and vacation plans take shape, it’s the perfect time to think not just about where you’re going—but how to prepare for the unexpected while you’re away. Whether you’re planning a trip abroad, a summer road trip, or just some time to unwind, having the right team in place can give you peace of mind.

As an estate planning attorney, I’ve noticed that many of our clients schedule updates to their documents before heading out for summer vacations. It’s a smart move—and one I recommend. Here are some ideas for your own summer readiness checklist:

Your Financial Advisor:

  • Make sure your accounts are in order and accessible.
  • Confirm how to get in touch if you need to transfer funds, make a large purchase, or deal with an emergency.
  • Review your budget for the trip so you’re not caught off guard by currency conversion fees or international purchase limits.

Your Insurance Agent:

  • Double-check your life insurance and update any beneficiary info—especially if you’ve created or updated your estate plan recently.
  • Ask about travel insurance to cover things like flight cancellations, lost luggage, or health issues abroad.
  • If you’ll be trying something adventurous (zip-lining, snorkeling, hiking in remote areas), check if your policies cover those activities.
  • Review your health insurance coverage for travel. You might need a short-term international health plan.

Your Tax Pro:

  • Planning to shop while you travel? Ask about VAT (Value Added Tax) refunds in other countries.
  • Learn about customs duties when returning to the U.S.—you may owe taxes on certain purchases.
  • Make sure any large international purchases don’t create tax surprises when you get home.

Your Estate Planning Attorney (that’s us!):

  • Update your will or trust—especially if your family, finances, or goals have changed.
  • Set up a power of attorney so someone you trust can handle things while you’re away.
  • If your kids are staying with someone else, we can prepare a temporary guardianship or limited power of attorney so their caregiver can make medical and school-related decisions.
  • Review your health care directives—it’s a good time to make sure they still reflect your wishes.

Vacations are meant to be enjoyed—not worried through. With a little planning and help from your trusted advisors, you can head into summer with confidence, knowing you’ve done your part to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Summer is also a great time to reflect on your long-term goals. Whether you’re approaching retirement, planning for a growing family, or thinking about legacy giving, a seasonal check-in can bring clarity. We often see clients using the slower summer months to organize their affairs, complete their estate planning documents, and have important conversations with loved ones. Don’t wait until the end of the year to update your plans—summer offers a natural opportunity to get ahead of deadlines and feel secure before the busy fall season begins. A little time spent planning now can bring lasting peace of mind all year long.
