Southern Handcraft Society: Keeping Crafting Alive in Pembroke Pines

The Southern Handcraft Society, Chapter One, is more than just a craft club—it’s a vibrant community dedicated to preserving the art of handmade creations. This not-for-profit organization, with six chapters throughout South Florida, is committed to sharing, teaching, and learning both traditional and modern crafting techniques.

Chapter One meets the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines. Meetings include light refreshments, a short business session, and a lively “show n’ tell” where members share their latest projects. Members also participate in a fun craft raffle and enjoy a hands-on “make it and take it” project led by fellow crafters or local artisans.

The society hosts workshops and retreats that bring all chapters together for days filled with creativity and camaraderie. One of the highlights of the year is the much-anticipated Holiday Craft Show—Holiday Fantasies—held every October at the community center. The event features a dazzling array of handcrafted items including quilts, paintings, knitted goods, beaded jewelry, and tasty treats like chocolates, jellies, and baked goods.

Beyond crafting, SHS proudly supports community service efforts. One of their ongoing projects benefits Women in Distress by creating care packages filled with toiletries and small toys for incoming clients and their children—small tokens that make a big difference.

With members ranging from teenagers to great-great-grandmothers, SHS is truly a multigenerational group that thrives on creativity, learning, and friendship. Whether you’re an experienced artisan or a beginner eager to learn, you’re warmly invited to join the SHS family.
