Davie Cracks Down on Speeding with New School Zone Camera Program

The Town of Davie initiated a School Zone Speed Safety Program aimed at enhancing the safety of children, residents, and school staff by curbing speeding in school zones. As part of the program’s first phase, two speed cameras became operational on March 17, 2025, issuing warnings to drivers. This warning period continued through April 16, 2025. On April 17, citations began being issued to anyone caught speeding through the community’s school zones.

In the initial phase of the School Zone Speed Safety Program, the initial camera locations are:

  • Eastbound on SW 30th St. at Nova Southeastern University and University School
  • Northbound on SW 133rd Ave at Flamingo Elementary/ Western High
  • Additional cameras will be installed throughout the town as part of a phased approach.

The speed cameras operate on school days from 30 minutes before school starts until 30 minutes after school ends. During these times, vehicles traveling more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit will receive a $100 civil citation. The violation is not considered a traffic violation and does not carry points on the driver’s record, according to the terms of the School Zone Speed Safety initiative.

The program utilizes sophisticated radar equipment to monitor vehicle speeds as traffic approaches and passes the equipment. When a vehicle exceeds the threshold limit during school hours, photographs of the car and its license plate are taken. The infraction’s date, time, speed, and location are recorded on the digital image. The Davie Police Department reviews each incident before issuing a citation.
