Slam Dunk Success: Coral Springs’ Shon Abaev Makes All-American History

Coral Springs has a new reason to celebrate, as local teen Shon Abaev has made history in the world of high school basketball. A standout Varsity Boys’ Basketball player from Calvary Christian Academy (CCA) in Fort Lauderdale, Shon has been selected as one of only 24 players from the Class of 2025 to participate in the prestigious Boys 2025 McDonald’s All-American Game. This incredible honor not only places him among the nation’s elite athletes but also marks him as the first-ever player from CCA to receive such recognition in the school’s 25-year history. Even more impressive, Shon is the only player from Broward County to earn this distinction this year.

The McDonald’s All-American Games have long been a launchpad for basketball legends like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant. Now, Shon joins this exclusive group, a testament to his hard work, dedication, and exceptional talent. As a 6’7” small forward, Shon’s skills on the court have earned him national recognition, with a “Five-Star” composite rating and top rankings from 247Sports. His ability to lead, score, and elevate his team has not only brought pride to CCA but also shined a spotlight on the growing talent within our local schools.

Shon’s journey is more than just about personal achievement; it’s a story of perseverance and community pride. His selection highlights the power of sports in shaping character and fostering community spirit. “Shon is a driving force for CCA’s Varsity Basketball team,” said Keith Huisman, CCA’s District Director of Athletics. “He plays incredible team basketball but can take over a game at any moment.”

Having received 26 college offers, Shon ultimately chose to sign with the University of Cincinnati, continuing a legacy of excellence and joining a prestigious list of Bearcats who have played in the McDonald’s All-American Games.

Shon’s story is an inspiration to aspiring athletes in Coral Springs and beyond. His dedication, work ethic, and character remind us all of what is possible with determination and support. As he takes the court at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on April 1, our community will be cheering him on, proud to see one of our own shine on the national stage.
