Explore, Discover, Dance: Celebrate Hollywood’s Heritage with HHS This February!

Discover Hollywood’s Past at the Hollywood History Hunt and Disco Ball

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… history was being made—just like it is every day in Hollywood, Florida! The Hollywood Historical Society (HHS) invites everyone in the city to celebrate and honor Hollywood’s rich heritage with its first-ever Hollywood History Hunt and Disco Ball on February 22. Get ready for a day of adventure, fun, and nostalgia in one of Florida’s most vibrant cities.

What is the Hollywood History Hunt?

The Hollywood History Hunt kicks off at 4:00 PM at City Hall. This team scavenger hunt will challenge participants to explore historic sites across six commission districts, from Boulevard Heights to Emerald Hills. Teams will decipher clues, complete history-themed challenges, and discover hidden gems throughout the city.

  • Who Can Participate? Teams of 2 to 6 people—friends, families, local businesses, and community organizations—are encouraged to join this free event. If you’ve missed the old Hollywood Gazette scavenger hunts, this is your chance to relive the excitement!
  • How to Join: Gather your team at City Hall at 4:00 PM to receive your first clue and embark on this city-wide adventure. Registration details are available on the HHS website at www.hollywoodhistoricalsociety.org.

Celebrate with the Disco Ball

At approximately 6:00 PM, the hunt will lead participants to the Historic Hammerstein House, where prizes will be awarded, and winners will be celebrated. But the fun doesn’t stop there! The lawn will transform into a 1970s-themed street festival featuring:

  • A live DJ spinning tunes from the ‘70s and beyond.
  • Vintage vendors showcasing retro goods.
  • A Kids Zone with a mini-scavenger hunt.
  • Delicious food and beverages, including beer and wine, available for purchase.

Costumes are encouraged but not required—bring your best disco vibes! Tickets for the Disco Ball can be purchased on the HHS website, with proceeds supporting HHS education and preservation programs.

Prizes and Community Support

Generous prizes for the History Hunt and raffles have been donated by local Hollywood merchants. “Events like the History Hunt and Disco Ball make history fun for all ages and create a sense of pride and heritage in Hollywood’s unique story,” says HHS Executive Director Andy Ruffner.

About the Hollywood Historical Society

The Hollywood Historical Society was founded in 1974 to preserve Hollywood’s rich history, starting with advocacy to save the original Hollywood Hills School. While the school couldn’t be saved, the organization has grown over the past 50 years through educational programs and preservation efforts.

This year, HHS is focusing on celebrating Hollywood’s history beyond the 1920s and 1930s, exploring the city’s evolution in later decades. “We want to highlight all of Hollywood’s neighborhoods and show how its recent past has shaped the city today,” Ruffner explains.
