Talented photographers are invited to showcase their skills and compete for cash prizes in the 2025 Long Key Photo Contest. This annual event, judged locally, highlights the stunning and diverse landscapes of the Long Key Nature Center and Natural Area, one of Broward County Parks and Recreation Division’s hidden gems. Located in West Davie, this park is a haven for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
About the Contest
Organized by the Friends of Long Key (FOLK), a 501(c)(3) non-profit group dedicated to preserving the park’s natural beauty and history, the contest offers an exciting opportunity for photographers of all ages. “The 2025 Long Key Photo Contest once again gives us a chance to show off the park we love and share its beauty with people who were previously unaware of one of Broward County’s hidden treasures,” said John Haeflinger, President of FOLK. “We look forward to once again being amazed by the outstanding talent of local photographers of all ages and hope even more of them will take advantage of this opportunity to show off their skills this year.”
The contest features multiple award categories, including:
- Best in Show
- Scenery
- Botanical/Plants
- Wildlife
- Butterflies/Moths/Insects/Arachnids
Youth categories are also available for photographers under 13 and those aged 13-17. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in each category. All photographs must be taken within the Long Key grounds.
A Rich Historical and Natural Site
Long Key Nature Center has a rich history, once serving as home to the Tequesta and Seminole tribes. It later became famous as the site of Pioneer City and the Kapok Tree Restaurant, known for its grand oak trees, Roman-inspired decor, and prime rib. Today, the park spans over 160 acres, making it one of the largest nature preserves in Broward County. Visitors can explore its admission-free Nature Center and enjoy its lush, forested landscapes.
Photo Walks for Inspiration
To help photographers prepare for the contest, FOLK and the Long Key Nature Center are offering “Off the Beaten Path” photo walks. These guided tours, led by park experts and seasoned photographers, provide exclusive access to areas of the park not typically open to the public. Participants will receive tips and techniques for capturing exceptional nature shots, offering a unique opportunity to find inspiration and perfect contest entries.
Visit FOLK’s Facebook page, Instagram page, or their official website for more information about the photo walks.
