In March 2019, Hollywood, Florida, residents approved a General Obligation Bond (GO Bond) to fund the construction of a new police headquarters. This initiative addresses the limitations of the current facility, built in 1974, which no longer meets the needs of the city’s growing population and the expanding police force.
The new headquarters is being constructed south of the existing facility, on land previously used by the Orangebrook Golf & Country Club driving range. The design encompasses approximately 100,000 square feet and includes a secure parking structure for police department staff. It will house all necessary police functions and feature a new radio tower for the city’s public safety and radio equipment. The facility is designed to accommodate the evolving needs of the Hollywood Police Department for many years to come.
Construction commenced on August 14, 2024, following the approval of the construction contract by the City Commission on May 1, 2024.
The project has been designed with a focus on sustainability, aiming to minimize its carbon footprint throughout its lifecycle. Efforts include reducing construction-phase carbon emissions by 9.7% compared to the baseline design and implementing energy-efficient features such as LED lighting, smart building technology for HVAC systems, and the use of native landscaping to reduce water usage.
The new headquarters will address several deficiencies of the current facility, including outdated technology spaces, non-compliance with updated hurricane building codes, security concerns, inconsistent air conditioning, and insufficient space for property evidence storage. By providing modern amenities and infrastructure, the new facility aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Hollywood Police Department.
Community engagement has been a vital component of the project’s development. Public meetings have been held to update residents on the project’s progress and gather feedback. For instance, on August 12, 2024, a public meeting was conducted to discuss the project’s design, current progress, and upcoming construction schedule.
The approved bond budget for the project is $72,551,950, reflecting the city’s commitment to investing in public safety infrastructure. The new headquarters is expected to significantly improve the working environment for police personnel and enhance the department’s ability to serve the Hollywood community effectively.
