From Brooklyn to Boca: Local Playwrights Bring a World Premiere Comedy to South Florida

It’s not often South Florida has the opportunity to showcase the World Premiere of a new play – especially one written about our local town!  When FROM BROOKLYN TO BOCA opens on January 9th, 2025, in (of course) Boca Raton, it will mark a milestone in the theatre community.

Penned by local playwrights, Sharon Pfeiffer, of Boca Raton, and Deni B. Sher, of Weston, it’s a comedy unlike anything else we’ve ever seen. They describe it simply by saying, “It’s The Sopranos meet The Goldbergs- on stage!”

Deni, a produced screenwriter, met her co-writer, Sharon, at a reading of Deni’s latest script. That was the light-bulb moment for Sharon. She relayed her story idea to Deni and she made Sharon ‘an offer she couldn’t refuse!’ – to write the script. Now the story, originally written as a screenplay, has become the stage play that will hopefully, make its way to the silver screen!

The synopsis is hilarious: When Regina’s mobster husband, Frank, decides to rat on his crime family, Regina reluctantly agrees to relocate their real family via the Witness Protection Program. They go from shady Brooklyn to sunny Boca, where the not-so-perfect Italian Catholic family struggles to blend in now as a near-perfect Jewish family. Oy vey! It’s a play about Family, Love, Relationships and Acceptance. And it’s all done with comedy, humor, laughs and joy.

The cast of sixteen includes some of South Florida’s best comedic talent. Alex Alonso plays ‘Fuggedaboudit’ Frank, opposite Pfeiffer’s Regina. Their son is played by Kalel Carrera who, although only twelve, is already a veteran of the stage. The mobsters are played to the hilt by Vincent Prestigiacomo (Big Sal), Benjamin Giordano (Joey ‘Bag A Laundry’), Kevin Wilson (Mikey ‘The Bat’) and Al Giordano (Vinny).

Every character has a unique role in unraveling the plot with a surprising twist. Michael Blocksburg plays Rabbi Rabinowitz opposite Bob Sharkey’s Father O’Neill. The Federal Marshal, Agent Viso, is played by Roy Lynam. The ‘lisping’ New York lawyer is played by Nina Poulos. Leslie Kandel, Stephanie Manner, Jamie Mattocks, and Christian Cooper are seasoned actors who will steal the audience’s hearts in supporting roles, each in their own distinctive way. And you won’t want to miss the rising star of Cameron Holder’s, Dani.

The award-winning producer/director, Sharee Pemberton, recently returned to her Florida roots after spending years in Chicago’s TV, Film and Theatre worlds. She guarantees you will laugh at the humor written into the script and brought to life by the ensemble.
