City of Hollywood crews were out in force combating flooding by cleaning clogged storm drains last month. They were not the only ones, however. A number of dedicated residents joined the cause in efforts to counteract the rising water.
The city’s Adopt A Catch Basin Program encourages residents to clear drains near their property. During severe weather running water carries debris to storm drains, creating dams and causing flooding.
Whether you are part of the program or not, if you can safely rake debris away from a storm drain near your property, please do so. Your efforts will assist with expediting drainage and help prevent additional flooding.
Adopt A Catch Basin Program
A catch basin is a drain that collects stormwater from streets and transports it to the ground or local waterways via underground infrastructure. Catch basins exist to prevent flooding. Unfortunately, over time, they become clogged with debris, trash, or leaf litter. Keeping them clean helps prevent flooding and surface water pollution.
How can I adopt a catch basin?
Select a catch basin or storm drain near your residence. Please do not select a drain in a roadway or other hazardous area. Complete the Adopt A Catch Basin application by clicking on the QR code below.
Inspect the catch basin at least monthly and before storms, and clean as needed. Please follow all safety guidance listed on the application.
Points will be assigned for each submission. The catch basins with the most points annually will receive rewards for helping to prevent flooding and waterway pollution!
If you would like a paper application mailed to you, or if you have additional questions, please call 954-921-3414.
