Electric Vehicle (EV) sales represent the fastest-growing position of the vehicle market. In fact, according to a Goldman Sachs study EVs are expected to be about half of all autos sold by the end of the decade. One challenge EV drivers face is charging their batteries. To help ease worries about charging availability, The City of Weston is offering free charging at select public locations.
The City entered into an agreement with Florida Power and Light (FPL) to provide electric vehicle chargers at dedicated parking spaces in two City sports parks and at City Hall.
Partnering with FPL in the FPL EVolution Program is a win-win for the City and the community. The Program is looking to increase the availability of charging stations by more than 50%, stressing the importance of workplace charging accessibility as an effective way to promote the adoption of electric vehicles.
FPL has provided the EV-charging equipment, installation & maintenance and signage. The City of Weston agreed to offer charging as a free amenity and cover the cost of EV charging at the site’s current electric rate.
Construction on the EV stations began in September 2022. The chargers are level 3 (slow chargers) – ideal for workers who come to work in the morning to hook up and get a charge throughout the day or half a day. The Vista Park location is also convenient for students or teachers with an electric vehicle as it is adjacent to Cypress Bay High School.
