Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s Eagle Regiment Marching Band Marched “across the pond” this New Year’s Eve. A little over a year ago, the marching band was invited to participate in London’s New Year’s Day Parade (LNYDP). The honor is given to select bands from around the world and was a testament to the band’s performance.
The parade is a far cry from the inaugural parade in 1987 with 2,000 performers. Today, LNYDP attracts over 10,000 participants from the USA, UK, Europe, and beyond to delight the Capital City’s street audience of over 500,000 and a global TV audience, which reaches more than 500 million.
The students that participated in the once-in-a-lifetime trip didn’t just play and go home. They toured London’s myriad of historical attractions including The King’s official residence, Buckingham Palace, the ancient dungeons of the Tower of London and they took a ride on the World’s largest ferris wheel, The Eye of London.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ Band family is recognized as one of the finest and most comprehensive high school band programs in the nation. Performing ensembles include the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band I, II and III, Indoor Percussion, and nationally-ranked Color Guard. In the fall, all of these groups combine to form the award-winning EAGLE REGIMENT MARCHING BAND – the largest organization at Stoneman Douglas High School.
