Student Artist Showcase Rewards Talented Young Artists

High Speed by Blake Alverez

The 2019 Student Artist Showcase did not disappoint. The annual program, sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Weston, featured over 200 pieces of exceptional original artwork created by Weston’s most gifted young artists on display at the Weston Branch Library.

Arts Council President Jami Nix Rahn says the Student Artist Showcase is the most exciting event in her opinion. “Every year, the library walls come alive with color and excitement that can’t help but make visitors feel good as they view the incredible work on display.”

Student Artist Showcase Director Gryssele Machicote continues to be impressed. “The artwork just keeps getting better and more creative.”

For the first time ever, every private and public school in Weston, along with Western High School, was represented. Art teachers were invited to select up to ten pieces of art to display in the Showcase.

A panel of art and education professionals evaluated the artwork based on originality, creativity, reflection, visual perspective and technique. Mayor Daniel Stermer and Weston City Commissioners Margaret Brown and Byron Jaffe, along with State Representative Richard Stark, awarded prizes to the first, second and third place winners in seven different grade categories. Honorable Mention awards were also presented. Every student featured in the exhibit received a certificate of participation and a one-day pass to Young At Art Museum.

First grader Blake Alvarez, from Manatee Bay Elementary, was the first-place winner for his grade category. He says he is already looking forward to next year. “I felt very happy about my artwork being selected. I want to participate again next year because it was an amazing experience.”

Sagemont Art Teacher Lindsey Wuest is grateful to be able to display her students’ work publicly. “I believe this is the perfect opportunity for them to show their talent, to share ideas, to get inspired; and for their parents to see the benefits of painting and participating in a wonderful event like this.”

The Student Artist Showcase is a collaborative effort of the Arts Council of Greater Weston, Weston Branch Library, Weston Friends of the Library, Young At Art Museum, and City of Weston, as well as the dedicated art teachers at our local schools.
