Four Davie students were selected as winners of the 2019 “Drop Savers” Water Conservation Poster Contest. Each year, in conjunction with National Drinking Water Week, the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association sponsors the statewide contest, which encourages students in kindergarten through 12th grade to design an original poster promoting water conservation.
The Town of Davie had four winners, including two first place winners. Valeria Miranda, a kindergarten student at Davie Elementary, won First Place for Division 1 (Kindergarten and 1st grade). Eighth grader Sophia Fermin, from Nova Middle School, won First Place for Division 4 (grades 6-8). In Division 2 (grades 2-3), Nova Blanche Forman Elementary thirdgrader Anabia Anwar won Third Place. Nova High School senior Zona Desousza won Second Place in Division 5 (grades 9-12).
Town of Davie Utilities Operations Director Renuka Mohammed says Davie is proud and excited to have such talented and motivated students. The students were formally recognized by the Davie Town Council during Water Conservation Month. They received certificates, gift cards and water conservation educational materials.
Mohammed believes students are the future stewards of the environment, so it is important to teach them about the importance of water conservation. If they learn when they are young, it will become part of their mindset. “When young adults grow up thinking about water conservation, they’re more inclined to implement that throughout their lives and will be better equipped to teach other members of the community about the importance of saving water.”
Water conservation is something the Town of Davie Utilities Department takes very seriously. “We participate in various programs and events, as well as organize tours at the water and wastewater plants,” notes Mohammed. For example, Davie takes part in Broward County’s annual Water Matters Day.
